Can I ride the trail from south to north? Is it Ridable in that direction ?
Israel Bike trail is planned for riding, in general direction, north to south. There is a big difference riding uphill where the trail was designed for downhill and vice versa. The average rider who will ride the opposite direction could find himself facing a risky downhill slope or unridable, steep, uphill beyond his capability.
We've done the best we can to get a safe trail. We took care of steep and slippery slopes and posted signs along the trail. Now it is all upto the rider's responsibility and common sense.
We strongly reccomand not to stratch your capability to the limits at this harsh environment.
Can Children ride the trail ?
Anyone who has experience in moutain biking and capable of riding for 4-5 hours (about 40 Km) can ride any segment of the trail.
Where can I find navigation files \ GPS recordings?
GPS navigation files (KML, GPX) are available for download in every segment page:
Are the riding trails in the North already marked?
Is it possible to ride on trails in the Golan Heights or the Coastal Plains (Mishor Hahof?) Not yet. Up to date (October 2017), only the segments Sde-Boker - Ovda and Mizpe Ramon-Eilat are marked. Info regarding active and planned marked trails is available on our website- trail segments.
Is it necessary to regulate with IDF the entrance and/or passing firing zones?
Generally - no, except for the Neot Smadar-Shaharot segment. As a result of a great effort to assure safe riding, in collaboration with IDF, all the other segments pass at the edge of the firing zones.
Is the Israeli riding trail also the Israeli walking trail?
Only partially. There is no connection between the trails.
What kind of bicycle are best for the trail ?
It is extremly important to have the proper bike for the task and avoid riding it with unbranded bicycle. Why ?
Because riding the southern segments involves crossing verious types of terrain (gravel, rocks, sand...) and passing through hot and dry climate. The best bike setup for the trail is a full suspension, 29'' bike. 26'' are also great.
safely & pleasantly?
The Trail is properly marked, therefore only minimal navigating skills required. The maintenance of the trail is pretty good, therefore basic technical knowledge & a certain mountain riding experience will do (no rookie though). The trail is also designed in a friendly way for an equipped rider, so no special sportive skills are required. Each segment is designed for a 4 to 6 hours ride, its length is about 35 km.
Which season is most adequate for riding the trail?
It depends which segment you intend to ride. It is recommended to ride the Southern segments from October to the beginning of April. During the rest of the year the weather is too hot. When completed, all the other segments will be ridable during most of the year. Still, during the winter parts of the trails might be too muddy & slippery after the rain.
